A double chin can cause many cosmetic concerns. Even if you’re at a healthy weight and feel confident in the rest of your appearance, a double chin can become a focal point and leave you questioning the way you look.
Before recent innovation, the only way you could effectively treat a double chin, medically known as submental fullness, was to receive liposuction, and although patients would achieve their desired results, the downtime associated with liposuction was often long and arduous. Not everyone wants to undergo surgery to achieve their ideal facial contour. Conversely, some patients aren’t candidates for surgery. As a nonsurgical compromise, the FDA approved the use of Kybella for submental fullness.
Kybella is a minimally invasive injectable treatment, available at Lickstein Plastic Surgery, which destroys fat cells in the submental region, resulting in a slimmer profile.
How Does Kybella Work?
Kybella is composed of synthetic deoxycholic acid, which is a substance found naturally in the body. Its role is to aid in the metabolization of dietary fat and, in concentrated amounts, can reduce the size of the submental area.
When injected into the region of skin underneath the chin, Kybella begins to destroy fat cells and gradually reshape your double chin. At most, you will receive six Kybella injections, spaced one month apart, to achieve optimal results, but many patients report seeing results after just two or three injections.
How Long Will Results Last?
Because the fat cells are permanently destroyed, your double chin will not be able to return; however, it’s important that you maintain a healthy lifestyle for the longevity of your results. Although Kybella will ensure the elimination of unwanted fat, a poor diet or lack of exercise can cause remaining fat cells to expand.
Re-treatment is not expected with Kybella once you have obtained your cosmetic goals. Additionally, you will experience significantly less downtime than if you were to undergo surgery. Although certain side effects may occur, such as swelling, pain and redness around the treatment area, you should be able to return to your everyday routine in a matter of hours.
Is Kybella Right for You?
If you are curious about whether Kybella will treat your submental fullness, it’s beneficial to schedule a consultation with Dr. Lickstein who can examine the localized fat under your chin and determine whether Kybella would be effective.
Typically, if you have cosmetic concerns about your double chin and are in good general health, you may be a candidate for Kybella treatment; however, a thorough discussion of your aesthetic goals and an assessment of your medical history will allow Dr. Lickstein to suggest the right course of treatment.
