Types of Breast Implants in Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter, and Port St. Lucie

Who Gets Breast Implants?

The placement of breast implants is a very common cosmetic procedure: the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that more than 300,000 breast augmentation procedures were performed in 2022.Most people associate breast implants with breast augmentation to increase breast size, but this cosmetic procedure may be performed for a number of reasons. Some women also may choose to have their implants replaced with a smaller size as they adjust for natural breast reduction after significant weight loss or pregnancy. Breast implants may also be placed to correct natural breast asymmetry, as part of a breast lift, or during breast reconstruction after mastectomy. Patients may also wish to have breast implants placed during gender affirming surgery.

Types of Breast Implants

Choosing the right breast implants is a key step in your aesthetic journey, offering various options to meet your unique needs and goals. We offer the three popular types of breast implants, each with different fillers. Each type of implant—saline, silicone, and gummy bear (cohesive gel)—has its own advantages and characteristics.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline implants contain a saltwater formula in a smooth silicone shell. These implants are approved by the FDA for placement in women over 18 years old. When saline implants are used the implant shell is placed while empty and filled during the breast augmentation procedure. This method allows for a customized result with less visible scarring.

Silicone Breast Implants

Breast implants filled with silicone gel offer a variety of shapes. These implants are approved by the FDA for patients 22 years and older. Gel implants are pre-filled and their jelly-like formula that mimics the texture of natural breast tissue.

Cohesive Gel (Gummy Bear) Breast Implants

Cohesive gel, or “gummy bear” breast implants are silicone implants that have a more firm texture. Approved by the FDA for patients over 22, these breast implants have a tear-drop shape and are designed to hold a natural looking shape.

Choosing Your Breast Implants

Dr. Lickstein & Dr. Forleiter work closely with each patient to find the implant choice that will help them look and feel their best. There are several factors to consider when choosing your breast implants:

  • Current Breast Size:The amount of natural breast tissue you have will determine parameters for the size and type of breast implant that will be able to be placed.
  • Aesthetic Preference: Many patients prefer a very natural-looking enhancement, while some desire a more dramatic result.
  • Lifestyle: If you are very physically active, you may not want implants that are overly large and could interfere with certain activities.
  • Body Shape: Our surgeons will help you choose a breast implant size and shape that complements your natural body shape and provides a proportional contour.
  • Measurements: Aside from overall body shape, certain measurements such as shoulder width and ribcage width can help determine your ideal breast implant size.

Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Implants

icon q

Do breast implants need to be replaced after a certain amount of time?

There is no expiration date on breast implants. If you do not have any complications and you are pleased with your implants, and periodic imaging studies reveal they are intact, there is no need to replace them. Many women do choose to replace their breast implants approximately 10 to 15 years after their placement. Our bodies change as we age and many women choose to update their breast implants to suit their appearance, and some women choose to replace implants because they notice a slight deflation at some point within 25 years.

Can breast implants cause cancer?

There is no link between breast implants and breast cancer. There is a type of lymphoma called breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) that is very rare and is highly treatable when detected early. BIA-ALCL has been associated almost exclusively with textured breast implants, and the FDA is still researching the connection between implants and BIA-ALCL. The entire team at Lickstein Plastic Surgery prioritizes patient safety and education and will thoroughly discuss this during your consultation.

What are additional risks associated with breast implants?

All breast implants we use are approved by the FDA and have been demonstrated to be reasonably safe in scientific research. Still, there are risks associated with any cosmetic procedure and medical device. Choosing an experienced and board-certified plastic surgeon for your breast surgery is key to achieving a favorable outcome.

The most common long-term risk associated with breast implants is capsular contracture. This occurs when the scar tissue that is expected to form a capsule around the breast implant becomes too thick and tight. Capsular contracture can cause discomfort or pain and can also affect the appearance and feel of breasts. Capsular contracture can happen to anyone who gets breast implants and with all types of implants, but its likelihood can be reduced by working with an experienced surgeon. Our board-certified plastic surgeons are highly experienced in breast implant revision surgery to treat capsular contracture, and often perform this procedure to correct issues with implants placed by other plastic surgeons.

Additional breast implant risks include:
- Breast Implant Illness (BII)
- Pain
- Breast implant rupture (saline implants and silicone implants)
- Breast implant deflation (saline implants)
- Silent rupture (silicone implants)
- Asymmetry
- Infection

Will I be able to breastfeed with breast implants?

Yes, most women who were successful in breastfeeding before breast augmentation surgery are able to breastfeed with breast implants. The breast implant is placed under the breast tissue and should not interfere with breastfeeding.

icon q

What if the breast implants I choose are too large or too small?

Our surgeons focus on achieving natural-looking results and they will take the time to discuss your goals and lifestyle and review options with you in order to choose the correct size and shape breast implants for you. You are more likely to be pleased with your breast augmentation results if you see an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon and you are clear about your aesthetic goals. If you have had previous breast surgery and you are unhappy with the results, our doctors also specialize in breast revision surgery and breast implant removal and can help you achieve the results you want.

icon q

Will I be able to get mammograms with breast implants?

Yes, women with breast implants should receive yearly mammograms after the age of 40 or at whatever ages and intervals recommended by your doctor. It is important that you inform your mammography technologist that you have implants before the start of your procedure. Extra imaging may be needed for full breast tissue visibility.

Will breast implants make my breasts look younger?

Breast implants are placed to change breast size, but may not address other signs of aging to the breast. For patients who would like more youthful looking breasts, we suggest combining their breast implant procedure with a breast lift, which elevates the breast, areolae, and nipples to a higher position for a more youthful appearance.

We believe the best results are born from an in-depth discussion of patient goals, followed by a customized treatment plan.
