The eyebrows and forehead are the source of so many of our facial expressions, which is one reason that these areas often show early signs of aging. Skin laxity, wrinkles, and a lower brow line can all make a person look older than he or she feels. Fortunately for individuals in the Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter, and Port St. Lucie areas, the cosmetic surgeons at Lickstein Plastic Surgery can employ their considerable skill and expertise to create brow lift results that appear natural.
Benefits of a Brow Lift
A brow lift can address so many signs of aging to the upper face, yielding results that:
- Elevate sagging brows to a more alert position
- Improve eyebrow shape
- Tighten the skin of the forehead to smooth wrinkles
- Reduce the appearance of crow’s feet, brow furrows, and frown lines
- Create a more youthful appearance that still looks natural1
Who is a Candidate for Eyebrow Lift?
The ideal candidate for a brow lift is:
- Is in good physical condition
- Is non-smoker
- Has realistic expectations of what can be achieved through plastic surgery
Types of Brow Lift
There are a number of types of brow lift techniques performed at Lickstein Plastic Surgery.
Classic Brow Lift
A traditional brow lift, sometimes referred to as a coronal brow lift, employs a long incision across the top of the head to tighten forehead skin and elevate the eyebrows. This procedure yields the most pronounced results.
Endoscopic Brow Lift
An endoscopic brow or forehead lift is less invasive than the more traditional approach. This procedure uses smaller incisions of about one inch through which an endoscope is inserted to help the surgeon lift the skin of the forehead.
External Browpexy
An external browpexy is also a less invasive option than a traditional brow lift. During this procedure, a small incision is made above the eyebrow and internal sutures are used to lift the brow and tighten surrounding skin. This procedure rarely leaves a visible scar and is an excellent way to elevate the eyebrow.2
Brow Lift: What to Expect
Preparing for Brow Lift
The first step in preparing for a brow lift or forehead lift is to meet with a facial plastic surgeon you trust. During this meeting, your doctor will review your medical history and you will be able to candidly discuss your cosmetic goals, and the doctor will help you become educated about the different types of brow lift. Together, you will decide on the right treatment plan to meet your unique needs.
Before brow lift surgery, you may be asked to stop taking certain medications. If you are a smoker, you should quit before your procedure.
The Brow Lift Procedure
A brow lift is an outpatient surgical procedure that can be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. The surgeon begins the brow lift by making an incision, either at the top of the head behind the hairline or just above the eyebrow. The tissue and muscle beneath the forehead are readjusted and excess skin is removed to leave the upper face smoother and more youthful looking.
Recovery After Brow Lift
Brow lift recovery time depends on the type of brow lift you undergo. You can expect some discomfort, swelling, and bruising, but your surgeon will advise you on pain medications to help you stay comfortable. Most patients are able to return to work roughly one week after a brow lift, though recovery time may be shorter for patients who undergo an endoscopic or external brow lift. Your doctor will advise you when you can return to strenuous activities after a brow lift.3
Brow Lift Results
At Lickstein Plastic Surgery, our cosmetic surgeons employ their considerable skill to ensure that our patients’ brow lift results leave them looking naturally refreshed, more alert, and more youthful: never “tight” or “pulled.” Results of a brow lift are typically long-lasting.
How do I know which type of brow lift is right for me?
Before your brow lift is scheduled, you will attend a private consultation with your plastic surgeon. You will be able to discuss your cosmetic goals, and your surgeon will advise you on which type of brow lift will help you achieve them.
Will I have scars after my brow lift?
Our surgeons are very careful to place incisions in such a way that brow lift scars are rarely visible. For most brow lift surgery approaches, incisions are made behind the hairline.
Am I too young or too old for a brow lift?
If you are troubled by horizontal wrinkles on the forehead, frown lines, crow’s feet or other signs of aging to the upper face, you could be a good candidate for a brow lift. Typical brow lift patients are between the ages of 40 and 60, though we have performed forehead lift on patients of expanded age ranges.4
Can I combine brow lift with other procedures?
Yes. Patients at Lickstein Plastic Surgery can combine multiple procedures into a single surgery. The most frequent procedure we combine with brow lift is an eyelid lift (blepharoplasty), which addresses sagging eyebrows, hooding, and excess skin around the eyes. For more complete facial rejuvenation, you may also wish to combine your brow lift with a facelift, which addresses signs of aging to the mid to lower face.
